Use Auto Fix and Suggestions on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Learn how to turn on Auto-Correction, Suggestions, and Text Replacement. With these functions, you need fewer keystrokes to type.

Use auto correction

Auto-correct uses the keyboard dictionary to check spelling as you type and automatically correct misspelled words. Just write in a text box to use this feature.

To make sure this setting is enabled, do the following:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap General> Keyboard.
  3. Activate "Auto-Correction". "Auto-Correction" is enabled by default.

Use "Suggestions"

With "Suggestions" you can write complete sentences with just a few keystrokes.

As you type, it suggests words or phrases that you are likely to write next. The selection is based on previous conversations, your writing style and even the websites visited with Safari.

To turn off Suggestions, put your finger on or. Tap Keyboard Settings, then turn on Suggestions. Or go to Settings> General> Keyboard and toggle Suggestions on or off.

Set up text replacement

With Text Replacement, you use shortcuts to write common phrases. As soon as you enter the shortcut in a text field, it is automatically replaced with the phrase. For example, you could type "GM" and "Good morning" would automatically replace the shortcut.

To manage Text Replacement, tap Settings> General> Keyboard> Text Replacement.

  • To add text to replace, tap, and enter a phrase and a shortcut. When you're done, tap "Save".
  • To remove a text to be replaced, tap on "Edit", then on and finally on "Delete". Tap Done to save your changes.
