How do I operate a piston pump

The water pump without electricity

Pumping water with the help of pumps

Pumps for pumping water are usually divided into two categories:

  • the water pump without electricity
  • the water pump with drive motor that works with electricity

Pumps that deliver without electricity

When it comes to water pumps without electricity, most people immediately think of a hand pump in the garden, for example a handle pump that is powered by muscle power.

Pump drive from wind and solar power

But there are definitely more water pumps that work without electricity. For example, a water pump can deliver water with the help of wind power. A pump can also be driven by heating water.

However, these pump systems are all dependent on the current weather situation and cannot guarantee regular water pumping. This is where conveyor technology comes into play that is by no means new. On the contrary - the technology is so old that it is being forgotten more and more in many places.

A water pump without electricity - the ram pump

This water pump, which delivers without electricity, is a so-called ram pump. However, certain requirements must also be met here so that the ram pump can pump water without electricity. But the ram pump can pump water at any time and regardless of the weather or the time of day.

Requirements and principle of operation of the ram pump

There must be a body of flowing water, for example a stream, a spring or a river. The pump itself must be installed at a significantly lower point. A downpipe or drive pipe is installed in between.

Stately funding levels

The water flowing into the pump through the propulsion pipe stops abruptly. This creates pressure. This pressure can be used to pump water upwards. If the construction of the ram pump is optimal, the ram pump can deliver the water up to 20 times higher than the length of the drive tube. With a 10 m long drive pipe, a delivery height of up to 200 m can be achieved - provided that the delivery line is also equipped with non-return valves.

Ram pumps were widespread until around 100 to 150 years ago. It was only with the discovery of electricity and the steadily improving power supply over time that the ram pumps were more and more forgotten. However, numerous ram pumps are still used today, especially in mountainous and remote areas such as the Alps.

Nowadays, however, there are always better ways to use so-called renewable energies. For example, you can install a small solar system and store the electricity generated in appropriate batteries. Modern solar systems achieve good electricity yields even when it is cloudy, while the latest batteries can store electricity more and more efficiently. Accordingly, with such a solar system, you can also make yourself completely independent of weather conditions and the times of day and night.
