News of an upcoming debut for SM Entertainment attracted widespread media coverage within South Korea and internationally, with many comparing Exo to SM boy band TVXQ. It was also reported that Exo would be competing with a new girl group from rival YG Entertainment.

2006–2012: Formation and the first years

Exo-K's leader, Suho, was the first member to join SM Entertainment in 2006. The following year Kai sang at the SM Youth Best Contest with the support of his father; he won and got a contract.

Chanyeol, who took second place in a Smart Model Contest, and Sehun, who completed four auditions within two years, were the next members to become trainees in 2008.

2010 Exo-Ks sang D.O. at his casting and eventually got a contract. The last Exo-K member to become a trainee was Baekhyun, who joined through SM Entertainment's casting system in 2011 and trained for about a year before debuting. Kris auditioned for Exo-M in Canada in 2008 before moving to South Korea for training.

That same year, Lay auditioned in Changsha, China, and then moved to South Korea, while Xiumin and his friend went to an audition and came in second. In 2010, Luhan was scouted and cast by SM Entertainment in Seoul, while Tao was scouted on a talent show.

The last member to join Exo-M was Chen, who attended the casting in 2011. The band's first televised appearance was on December 29, 2011 at the annual SBS Gayo Daejeon event.

Exo-K and Exo-M debuted with the single "Mama" on April 8, 2012, followed by the EP Mama on April 9. The two sub-bands promoted the album separately from each other; Exo-K performed on the South Korean music program The Music Trend, while Exo-M performed at the Top Chinese Music Awards in Shenzhen on the same day.

The Korean version of the EP reached number 1 on the South Korean Gaon album chart and number 8 on the Billboard World Albums chart, while the Mandarin version reached number 2 on the Chinese Sina album chart and number 1 on various Chinese streaming media Platforms landed. Prior to debut, Exo released two singles titled "What Is Love" and "History", which landed at # 88 and 68 on the Gaon Digital Chart and # six on the Sina Music Chart. In 2012 Exo was named Best New Asian Group at the Mnet Asian Music Awards and a Newcomer at the Golden Disc Awards.

2013–2014: commercial success

The group's first studio album, XOXO, was released on June 3, 2013 in two versions: one in Korean and one in Mandarin. In contrast to the EP Mama, for which Exo-K and Exo-M organized separate promotions, XOXO was mainly promoted jointly in South Korea.

Exo recorded the album's lead single "Wolf" together, but the rest of the album tracks were recorded separately. A new version of the album, entitled Growl, was released on August 5, 2013 with three additional tracks. The new single "Growl" reached number three on the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100. All versions of XOXO sold over a million copies, making Exo the first South Korean artist to reach this milestone in 12 years.

In December of that year Exo released a second EP, Miracles in December, as a special winter album with the single of the same name. Prior to release, the group promoted the album through their first reality show, Exo’s Showtime, which premiered on November 28, 2013 on MBC Every 1 cable channel.

Following their 2013 releases, Exo won Song of the Year at the Melon Music Awards for “Growl” and Album of the Year at the Mnet Asian Music Awards for XOXO and Daesang at the Seoul Music Awards. In addition, Exo-M received the Most Popular Group Award at the Top Chinese Music Awards 2013.

Exo's third EP, Overdose, was released on May 7, 2014. The album was originally due to be released on April 21, but has been postponed. Overdose was advertised similarly to Mama, with Exo-K being advertised in South Korea and Exo-M being advertised primarily in China. The album had more than 660,000 pre-orders, making it the highest-order Korean EP in history.

The Korean edition also reached number two on the Billboard World Albums chart and number 129 on the Billboard 200, making Exo the top-ranked Korean male group on the charts at the time.

Overdose became the best-selling release of 2014 in South Korea and was the first EP to top the annual charts and win the Album of the Year award at the Mnet Asian Music Awards. On December 22nd, Exo released their first live album, Exology Chapter 1: The Lost Planet.

On May 15, 2014, Kris filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment to terminate his contract, alleging that SM was disregarding his health, negotiating unfair profit distributions, restricting his freedom and treating him more like a product than a person.

On May 24th the group started their first headlining tour "Exo from Exoplanet 1 - The Lost Planet". The tickets for the concert were sold out in 1.47 seconds. Exo broke the record for the fastest sold-out concert by a Korean artist. On October 10, Luhan also filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment to terminate his contract. He cited health problems and claimed that he was treated differently from the Korean band members.

2015: criticism

On March 7, 2015 Exo started their second world tour “Exoplanet 2 - The Exo’luxion” with 70,000 visitors on five evenings in the Olympic gymnastics arena in Seoul. On March 30, 2015, the group released their second studio album Exodus in both Korean and Mandarin versions.

Domestic pre-orders for the album exceeded 500,000 copies within 24 hours, setting a new record for pre-orders. The lead single "Call Me Baby" was released prematurely on March 27th as versions of the song were leaked online.

The music videos were released four days later; the Korean version later became the most viewed K-pop music video of the first half of 2015. The album topped the Gaon album charts for four consecutive weeks, selling over a million copies.

Exodus was named Album of the Year at the Mnet Asian Music Awards 2015, making Exo its third consecutive win. In April 2015, Exodus peaked at # 95 on the US Billboard 200, making it the top Korean artist on the charts. Exo also debuted on Billboard's Canadian Hot 100 chart at number 98, making it the first K-pop group and the second largest Korean artist on the charts.

Tao filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment on August 24th as the third member to terminate its contract. This followed after Tao's father's social media postings on the Chinese social network Weibo earlier this year expressing his wish that his son step out of the group and return to China due to health problems and a lack of support for individual career development should.

SM responded to his lawsuit with a statement: “Our company plans to do everything in our power to respond legally in both Korea and China. We also plan to take legal action to respond to Tao's illegal actions ”.

Exo released a new version of Exodus on June 3, 2015, called Love Me Right. Due to Tao's absence, the nine-member group promoted the song. In October of the same year, Exo was the first artist to hold a dome concert in South Korea; it was called “Exo - Love Concert in Dome” and took place in the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul.

On November 4, 2015, Exo released their Japanese debut single Love Me Right. On the day it was released, the album sold 147,000 copies and topped the Oricon charts. Five days later, Exo released a special single called "Lightsaber" to promote Star Wars: The Force Awakens before its release in South Korea, as part of a collaboration between SM Entertainment and Walt Disney.

On December 10th, Exo released its second winter special and fourth EP Sing for You, which included the singles "Sing for You" and "Unfair". The album sold 267,900 copies in its first week, breaking the record for most first week sales by a Korean artist.

“Unfair” was also the first K-pop song to appear on Apple Music's “Best of the Week” playlist, and Exo was the first Korean band to appear on the platform's homepage. A portion of the profit from the album was donated to the UNICEF “Smile For U” campaign to support the musical education of children in Asia.

2016-2017: Worldwide success

On January 5, 2016, SM Entertainment won one of its counterclaims against Tao. The company sued Tao for failing to pay the company compensation after he left.

SM released an official statement stating: “SM has ongoing lawsuits against Exo members Wu Yifan (Kris), Luhan and Tao for violating their exclusive contracts and participating in illegal actions in China. Among these lawsuits, SM filed a lawsuit against Tao for failing to reimburse the damage incurred. A court in Qingdao, China ruled that Tao SM Entertainment must pay damages and interest ”.

Exo's third studio album Ex’Act and the singles “Lucky One” and “Monster” were released on June 9, 2016 in both Korean and Mandarin versions. Domestic pre-orders for the album exceeded 660,000 copies, making it the highest-order K-pop album of all time at the time.

The singers will keep their contracts with SM until 2022. SM is rewarded for their work outside of Korea and Japan.

Kris and Luhan's Chinese agencies will share the associated revenue with SM for activities outside of Korea and Japan (where SM has exclusive rights under the contract) as SM technically has management for its non-Korean-Japanese operations until 2022, when their contracts with SM expire.
