Why you need a mentor
Note: Please do not read this article if counseling is just a stepping stone for you. Just a means to an end to get you a “real” job after two to three years. Or if you have been completely satisfied with your favorite topic, your regular customers for a few years and see no need for change.
Because then you probably don't want to look for a mentor. And certainly not someone who really challenges you so that you can develop yourself further in counseling. If that doesn't apply to you, then a mentor and the search for it are extremely relevant.

Jump from plateau to plateau
It happens automatically: If you keep doing the same thing for a certain time, you will get better and at some point really good at it. The positive side effect of this is that everything is much easier then (analyzing information, preparing for a specific conversation, taking a business trip to the same places, etc.).
The disadvantage is that the learning curve is slowly becoming flatter. Dirk Kreuter once reported about an applicant who introduced himself to him with ten years of professional experience in sales. From his point of view, it was more like a year of professional experience that was repeated ten times. Nothing noteworthy had changed in ten years.
This can also happen to you in counseling, although it is considered a very learning-intensive environment. Like many other consultants, John Kim (lecturer and blogger on “ConsultantsMind”) sees the career as an S-curve. There are phases when the learning and the progress is enormous. And there are phases that are described as plateaus.
If we stay too long on such a plateau and make ourselves comfortable, sooner or later we will fall off this plateau again. That is why it is so important that we can take the momentum with us on the steep side and determine when the curve flattens out again and dares the next jump. But how can you find out so easily?
The wisdom of more experienced advisors
When you approach whatever new topic you are approaching, you are probably gathering information first. In the second step it becomes knowledge, namely when you actually use the information. And only after a long period of time does the whole experience become wisdom. The wisdom of being able to say what to do and, above all, what not to do.
The latter is especially important to get clarity. Because clarity gives you the ability to implement it. The more options we have in a situation, the more difficult it becomes to make a choice and then actually start. This applies to job hunting, estimating a new job, etc.
And this is exactly where a mentor can really help you: He can advise you against options because he knows from experience where the path is going. He can give you his experience and wisdom in crucial situations. In this way you benefit from his learning process, which sometimes takes decades.
That is also the reason why I see mentoring programs in companies (especially consultations) not as a substitute for a “real” mentor, but as a supplement. Because the mostly only slightly older colleagues can help you with internal company processes, but nothing more. There is a lack of years of experience and (at least as importantly) independence. If you really want to get ahead, then you have to find a mentor yourself.
And the search is worth it: I was able to learn these things from my mentor Volker at an early age. After work we talked about S-curves, business ideas, positioning as a consultant, dealing with resistance, etc. Even if I haven't understood everything that he was informing me so easily, a lot of it turned out to be gold in retrospect.
