Companies are therefore faced with the challenge of finding the right balance in keyword research. Research is literally looking for a needle in a haystack. Thorough keyword research and a well-developed keyword database are the basis for the success of search engine optimization (SEO), search engine marketing (SEM) and search engine advertising (SEA). Sistrix Keyword Tool

The Sistrix Keyword Tool is a good way to get an overview of keywords and their search volume. You enter a keyword in the tool's mask and receive suggestions for keyword extensions. The search volume of the terms is not given in absolute numbers, but Sistrix provides an estimate of the search frequency using a bar chart. The tool also outputs real user questions and shows the search frequency using the bar chart. A list of keywords related to your input can provide further inspiration for your keyword research. You can carry out ten keyword queries per day for free. If you create a free account with Sistrix, you can increase this number to 100 queries per day.

The Sistrix Keyword Tool is part of an extensive free toolbox from the provider. In addition to keyword research, it includes a visibility index for your domain (s) and a hashtag generator for Instagram.

Google Ads Keyword Planner

With the Google Ads Keyword Planner, the search engine market leader Google offers the best-known free tool to carry out keyword research for free. The Google Ads Keyword Planner is the successor to the former Google Adwords Keyword Tool. It combines the functions of the former tool with the no longer available traffic estimator and is usually aimed at Google advertisers. As with the Adwords Keyword Tool, you can use the Google Ads Keyword Planner to generate keyword lists with several hundred terms. However, in the meantime you are only given the average search volume per month in rough areas. In addition to the search volume, the Ads Keyword Planner offers bid proposals for the respective search terms and suggests related search queries. You are also given the CPC for each keyword. The collected data comes directly from Google and can be examined using many filter functions. You can use keyword lists in various ways using the export and import functions.

One of the main disadvantages of Google Ads Keyword Planner is that it does not provide an exact search volume. However, there is a more cumbersome way of displaying average search volumes. To do this, add a keyword idea to a plan and select a certain period - for example 12 months - for the keyword plan. The Ads Keyword Planner then gives you the impressions for the last 12 months in absolute numbers. If you divide this by 12, you get the average search volume for a single keyword.

In addition to this disadvantage, you must also keep in mind that the Ads Keyword Planner does not carry out any competition analysis. And they only get a limited number of keyword suggestions.

Google Trends

Google Trends is another tool you can use to do your keyword research for free. You can use the website to see how often a keyword has been entered by users on Google. But here, too, no absolute search volume is given, only relative values ​​to the total search volume. Google Trends also does not display values ​​such as the CPC or other keyword suggestions.

One of the advantages of Google Trends is that you can have data for different countries, regions and time periods. This is particularly helpful when monitoring the market: You can use the keyword search to find trends more quickly and include seasonal and regional fluctuations in your keyword research. In addition, the search trends on Google Trends are shown in real time.

Google Trends is therefore particularly suitable for market observation and for optimizing your website content with regard to regional and seasonal differences.

Google Search Console

Some users may still know the Google Webmaster Tool. In the meantime, Google has switched this off. The Google Search Console has taken its place. With it you get a comprehensive tool for keyword research and keyword monitoring. The Search Console enables you to have keywords with ranking, impressions, click rate and click figures for every website that you manage. In this way you can analyze existing websites in terms of their performance. Keywords can be displayed on the basis of individual web pages so that you can track exactly which search term your content is ranking under. This enables you to optimize your website and its content in the best possible way. The tool provides extensive statistics and enables time periods to be compared. In addition, the Google Search Console reveals SEO errors on your own website and helps you optimize.

The biggest disadvantage of the Google Search Console, however, remains that it can only be used for your own website or your own websites if you manage several. A general keyword research is not possible with the Search Console. And here, too, only impressions, but not absolute search volumes for keywords, are displayed.

Google Suggest

This is not a stand-alone tool. However, you should not completely ignore Google Suggest - the search suggestions via normal Google search. It gives you automatic suggestions for extensions to a keyword. Similar search queries are also listed within the displayed search results. In keyword research, Google Suggest is particularly suitable for inspiration before further differentiating the collected keywords.

Suggestit

The online tool Suggestit can be seen as an extension of Google Suggest and is also used purely for keyword inspiration and less for the qualitative analysis of keywords. Because, as with Google Suggest, there are no estimates of the search volume. You enter a search term and the tool provides you with further keyword suggestions. The difference to Google Suggest is that you can choose different data sources besides Google. For example, YouTube, Amazon and the B2B platform “Wer-liefert-was.de” are available as data sources.

Soolve

Soolve also joins the series of tools that provide you with keywords as suggestions, taking into account various data sources. Soolve uses the databases of Wikipedia, YouTube, Amazon, Answer.com and the search engines Google, Bing and Yahoo. Like Google Suggest and Suggestit, Soolve is particularly suitable for getting an overview and ideas for relevant search terms. However, a qualitative keyword analysis must be carried out using a separate tool.

SEORCH

Longtail keywords in particular can ensure a higher ranking depending on the content. They are not searched for as often as short keywords. However, they are also not as hotly contested and therefore less competition. A good tool for finding longtail keywords is SEORCH. It uses long-tail search suggestions from various sources in addition to Google (including Google News and Google Shopping) and includes, for example, the search engines Bing and Yahoo. There are also data sources such as Wikipedia, Amazon, YouTube or Ebay.

The results also contain possible variants for all letters and numbers and are sorted according to frequency. You can download your results as a CSV file for further use.

In addition to the longtail keyword tool, SEORCH offers you other free tools: a "W-questions tool", a snippet tool, a ranking check and an SEO OnPage comparison. Using the W questions tool, you can find the W questions you are actually looking for in the data sources, for example. The Ranking Check shows you the top 100 search results for a keyword on Google. It enables you to display your own page in this ranking. With the SEO OnPage comparison you can optimize your content for a specific keyword. To do this, enter the keyword and a comparison URL.

TrafficDesign SEO Keyword Generator

Anyone looking for inspiration or different keyword combinations will find digital support in the TrafficDesign SEO Keyword Generator. It gives you ideas for various keywords. You enter search terms in up to five keyword lists, which are then combined with one another. The Keyword Tool sorts the results in windows according to categories such as “exactly matching”, “largely matching” or “matching phrase”. The generator is not suitable for search volume analysis, but it gives you a way to quickly get keywords and their combinations.

Ubersuggest

With Ubersuggest you get another differentiated tool to carry out keyword research free of charge and with qualitative results. Ubersuggest uses the functions of Google Suggest. The tool determines all suggestions delivered by Google for a keyword, including search volumes and average PPC prices. In addition, the tool outputs a list of pages that achieve the best rankings for a specific search query. Ubersuggest also provides data such as the number of backlinks, page views and social shares for these pages.

Unfortunately, only three searches can be carried out free of charge per day. However, Ubersuggest turns out to be one of the most extensive of the free keyword and SEO tools that do not come from Google itself. If you have already identified a few keywords for yourself in advance using inspiration tools, you can use Ubersuggest to carry out a targeted qualitative analysis.

WDF * IDF tool

The tool presented here performs a WDF * IDF analysis based on the entered search term with (optionally) entered URL. The result is a list of the relevant terms that are related to your keyword. The WDF * IDF tool should definitely be used in your keyword research if you are not already doing a WDF * IDF analysis for your content in another way. The KeywordTools.org website works in a similar way to the Sistrix Keyword Tool. Unlike Sistrix, KeywordTools shows the search volume in absolute numbers. Keyword research using KeywordTools can be carried out for Germany and the English-speaking area.

Answer the Public

Answer the Public stands out as a keyword research tool primarily because of the unusual design of the results. But the tool offers more than just design: It combines a question and keyword tool in one. And it even goes one step further: Answer the Public also gives prepositions in connection with the keyword in keyword research. For example, for the search term “content manager” you will find results such as “content manager for mac”. Answer the Public also gives you search queries based on a comparison, such as "content manager vs. content marketing manager". You will also find related search terms and the keyword with extensions sorted in alphabetical order.

The tool also serves a large number of languages ​​in addition to English and German. For example, you can also include keywords for French or Spanish-speaking countries in your free research. All in all, Answer the Public offers you a very comprehensive tool for finding different keywords. What the free tool does not have in its luggage, however, is a visualization of the search volume of a keyword. Unfortunately, this data is not provided as a bar chart or in any other form. Keyword research for free: Tools with different strengths

Our list of free keyword research tools shows it clearly: the basic features are mostly very similar. However, each tool has its individual strengths and weaknesses. Particularly noticeable: The search volume and information on this can hardly be found in any keyword research tool with absolute numbers. If at all, this is usually listed as an estimate in the form of bar charts or ranges. However, if you use several of the free tools for your keyword research, you can increase the quality of your research. Good research involves several tools. At least in part, they refer to different data sources - even if most of them use data from Google.
